July 4th!
I had to work on July 4th and it was predicted to be a slow day Guess what? It wasn't! We were so busy so by the time I got off work at five, .I was already tired and frustrated. We had planned to go to DC to watch the fireworks and really didn't want to deal with the crowds. But every one else wanted to go so off we went.
Last year we watched the fireworks from the Virginia side by the Marine Corps Monument (Iwo Jima). THis year we decided to try by the White House. WHen started to get close, we realized that there was quite a line to get onto the grassy area. So we crossed the street to a small park area with a water feature. They had stone tables to sit on so we chose one near the water. James wanted to go for a walk so Jon took him to nearby freedom plaza to watch the skateboarders. While they were gone, Cheryl and I watched two little girls feed the ducks.

So cute! This is Cheryl as we waited.

This is me in my patriotic garb.

This is our pre-firework view.

And then the fireworks began.

James watching the fireworks.

And the Grand Finale!

After the fireworks, James took off towards the Metro Station. He really wanted to go home. We were debating whether or not to walk up to the other Metro Station but decided to check out Metro Center first. There didn't appear to be a line forming yet so we went on down. We got lucky and hit a mostly empty train. We all got seats and prepared for the long journey home. At Smithsonian Station, it got packed. Jon and I were on the left side of the train in the second seat. When we got on the train, a man was already sitting in the first seat. About a third of the way through the trip, He threw up. There was a Homeland Security Officer standing in front of him who got hit with vomit. The guy got off at the next stop but the vomit was still there in the tightly packed metro car. From my angle, I could smell it but Cheryl could every time the door opened and closed. It amazed me how the people in the car tried to help each other out after it happened. One women gave napkins, another hand sanitizer and another baby wipes. They took the sign of the wall to cover it up.
So that was my Fourth of July. Not the best day but at least I spent it with family.
