St. Clement's Island
On Sunday, Jon and I decided to drive down to Southern Maryland to visit St. Clements Island. For those of you who don't know what it is, let me. Clement explain. St. Clements Island is an island in the Potomac River were the first colonists to Maryland landed in 1634. The island was mostly a resting spot for the colonists while their leader, Leonard Calvert, negotiated with the native Yacomico Indians for their settlement, St. Mary's City. While they were waiting, They held what is thought to be the first Mass held in this part of the world.
In later years, a lighthouse was built on the island and it was called Blakistone. The lighthouse was eventually destroyed but has recently been rebuilt.
St. Clements Island is on one of the southern most tips of Maryland, in St. Mary's County.
To get to the island we took a Water Taxi. It cost seven dollars each and included admission into the museum. We took the Taxi over by ourselves. When we got to the island, a women with disabilities had just been dropped off at the dock so the guy offered us a ride to the monument which was about a half a mile walk. We took him up on it.
Once we got to the lighthouse we walked over to the giant cross that marks where the colonists held their Mass.
We then checked out the recently rebuilt lighthouse. We went up to the cupola, which no longer holds a light. This was our view!
After visiting the lighthouse, we went down to he beach to hunt for seashells. There were so many! Jon always skipped rocks, while I watched the waves.
The other side of beach held the remains of the first Lighthouse.
We walked back to the dock after awhile. Then took the ferry back to the mainland so we could visit the museum. This is Jon petting the museum bear.
So that was our visit to Maryland's first landing. We learned a lot about the history of our new home and had a great time basking in the sun.
