Road Trip to the Beach Part 2

The next morning, we talked about going to the Outer banks in North Carolina but decided instead to head home. Along the way we thought we would stop at Jamestown National Park. I was free park week so we knew it would be free. I dressed in my Easter Dress and we headed to Jamestown.

Jamestown National Park was really cool. We got there kind of early and we went in and visited the gift shop. Then we went to the entrance area. Since it was fee free, we just spoke to the park ranger. She explained the path and gave us a map and a sticker to show we had checked in. Then we went outside. They have a bridge that goes across the Tar Pits. The Tar Pits are teaming with turtles. I also got a picture of a snake. We looked at the animals for a awhile then we crossed.

The first thing you see when you cross the bridge is the Church Monument.

This is Jon and Cheryl in front of Church Monument. After Church Monument is the actual church. It isn't the same church from the the founding of Jamestown but it is built on the foundation of the original church and you can actually see it through a glass enclosure.

Inside the enclosure is a statue of Pocahontas.

This is the bell tower of the Church that dates back to the early 1600s.

This is looking out at the John Smith Monument from the Church.

The sight of Jamestown is actually a fairly recent discovery. Archeologists had thought that the sight had been entirely eroded away but it was discovered in 1994 that much of the sight remains. As a result of this discovery, it is an active archeological dig. As you can see in the picture above, the green tarp covers the current area of study.

As we were taking these pictures, the ferries came by.

We walked over to the museum where they house all of the artifacts that they have found at the Fort.

It was very interesting but it started to get hot and humid so we started to head back.

So that was our trip to Jamestown. We stopped in downtoen Williamsburg on the way home. We wanted to get something to eat. we went into this amazing candy store that had every thing your heart desired. Then we went to a pizza joint for lunch. It was okay. We headed back home after that. Jon and I were anxious to get back to Alice. We had a lot of fun and really enjoyed our outing. I want to go back to Virginia Beach and Jamestown again one day.
